ConcludedThe Gujarat High Court upheld service punishment imposed on police personnel.
The Gujarat High Court upheld the removal from service of nine Gujarat Railway Police constables for abandoning escort duty on the Sabarmati Express on 26-27 February 2002. The Court found they made a false entry at Dahod that they were departing by that train but instead boarded the Shanti Express, leaving the A-category train without any police escort when coach S-6 was set ablaze at Godhra killing 58 people. It rejected the pleas of bias and disproportionality, holding the bogus entries and abandonment proved and the penalty consonant with the Bombay Police (Punishment and Appeal) Rules. Both petitions were dismissed on merits. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
