Agartala Woman vs The State of Tripura and Others

The judgment of the Tripura High Court records the following account. A Division Bench took suo motu PIL on a newspaper report that a 28-year-old woman called for interrogation in an unverified theft complaint was beaten in the GB TOP lockup on 26 October 2021 without any arrest or case. Rejecting the State's denial, the court held on medical evidence of abrasions on both buttocks and hospital admission that she was detained for a considerable period for interrogation, deprived of D.K. Basu safeguards, and tortured and maltreated in police custody. It directed the State to pay Rs 2.5 lakh compensation through the Court Registry within one month and directed the DGP to ensure D.K. Basu compliance. The court clarified its observations would not affect any prosecution. No individual officer is named in the judgment. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
