Conviction
ConcludedThe trial court convicted the accused police personnel, as recorded in the Madras High Court judgment.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court dismissed the criminal appeal of Grade-I Police Constable B. Thiagarajan and affirmed his conviction under Sections 7 and 13(1)(d) read with 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. While posted at the Andipatti check post in Theni district, the officer intercepted two motorists on a motorcycle, seized their vehicle documents and mobile phone, and demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 1,000 under threat of a hefty fine. Following a trap laid by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing, the officer was caught red-handed accepting the phenolphthalein-treated notes. Justice M. Dhandapani held that the prosecution established the charges beyond reasonable doubt through consistent witness testimony and chemical analysis, confirming the sentence of one year simple imprisonment.
