A Morbi man was taken into custody by Morbi City police on the night of 18 February 2006 for an alleged Prohibition Act offence, kept in illegal detention, produced before court only on 20 February 2006, and died on 22 February 2006. The post-mortem revealed multiple ante-mortem injuries all over his body. The mother's private complaint led to Criminal Inquiry No.106/2006, but the accused officers' revision against rejection of the 'B' Summary was allowed in 2008. Recording the State's submission citing Nilabati Behera that suitable compensation may be awarded, the High Court directed the State to pay Rs.1.50 lakh lump-sum compensation to the mother within six months, clarifying the order was by direction of the Court and not to be treated as precedent.
