ConcludedThe Madras High Court recorded adverse findings against police personnel and ordered Rs 300,000.
The judgment of the Madras High Court records the following account. Bar leaders filed this habeas corpus petition for Advocate a Mettur man of Mettur, detained after an 11.06.2007 road-roko and brutally beaten in custody with lathis and boots, as recorded in the Legal Services Authority report dated 03.07.2007. The Division Bench rejected the police claim of a mild lathi-charge, holding the materials established custodial torture, and noted the foisted case against him (S.C. No.166/2010) had been quashed on 10.01.2011 as abuse of process. It directed the State to pay Rs.3,00,000 compensation within eight weeks, holding it the State's bounden duty to compensate custodial-torture victims adequately. It also directed the DGP to take appropriate action against the erring officials in a manner known to law. Matters not addressed in the cited judgment text are not recorded here.
