ConcludedThe Gauhati High Court recorded adverse findings against police personnel and ordered Rs 150,000.
The Gauhati High Court awarded Rs 1,50,000 to the widow of rickshaw puller a Mangaldoi man, who died after a Mangaldoi police party led by SI apprehended him and his brother at Gariapara on 13 July 1999. The police claimed a mob had manhandled the alleged dacoits, but villagers deposed that the police beat them with rifle butts, branches and kicks, and the post-mortem recorded nine injuries including a fractured rib and blood-filled thoracic cavity. Accepting the magisterial enquiry's conclusion that police beating after apprehension could not be ruled out, the Court held that no clean chit could be given to the personnel and saddled the State with compensation.
