ConcludedThe Gujarat High Court recorded adverse findings against police personnel and ordered Rs 150,000.
The Gujarat High Court held there was no doubt about violation of the human rights of a woman and her 13-year-old daughter, a 13-year-old girl, by Savarkundla police on the night of 29/30 June 1997. The Court found officers came drunk to the widow house at about 1 a.m. looking for her absconding son, dragged the girl to Mahakali Chowk and beat her with sticks, then took her to the police station where she was again beaten, after which she immolated herself and died the same afternoon. A Section 176 CrPC inquiry by the SDM held the police beating proved though abduction and rape were not proved. The Court directed Rs 1,50,000 interim compensation under Article 226, recoverable from officers found responsible, while a separate criminal case against six officials remained pending.
