UPSRTC is Uttar Pradesh’s passenger road transport corporation, established under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950, and headquartered in Lucknow. It is owned by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. On 25 August 2026, the state Cabinet approved expenditure for 250 new electric buses for FY2026-27 at an estimated total cost of Rs 425.50 crore.

What happened

The Allahabad High Court records that UPSRTC was established on 1 June 1972 under Section 3 of the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950, and incorporated as a body corporate; assets and liabilities of the former Uttar Pradesh Government Roadways were transferred to it.

The official SUGAM Yatra profile describes UPSRTC as a public-sector passenger road transport corporation serving Uttar Pradesh and adjoining states, and lists its headquarters at Tehri Kothi, MG Marg, Lucknow 226001.

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet decision dated 25 August 2026 approves a FY2026-27 expenditure proposal of Rs 400 crore for 250 electric buses: 100 12-metre, 50-seater Type-II buses and 150 12-metre, 41-seater Type-III buses. The estimated total cost is Rs 425.50 crore, with the remaining Rs 25.50 crore to be borne by UPSRTC.

The Cabinet release says the procurement supports compliance with Delhi’s rule allowing only CNG, electric and BS-VI vehicles from 1 November 2026 under CAQM directions.

What we could not confirm

The July 21 PTI report and August 26 TNN report describe the same 250-bus proposal with different timing; the later August 25 UP Cabinet release is used for the approval date. The opened UPSRTC profile did not provide audited financial statements or staff count.
