What happened
UTC was established on 30 October 2003 under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950 after Uttarakhand was formed, and inherited 957 buses and the existing administrative structure from UPSRTC; its headquarters is in Dehradun.
Hindustan Times reported that 100 new buses were added to UTC's fleet and flagged off by the Chief Minister on New Year's Day 2026, together with 10 AC and two sleeper buses operated on contract. It also reported that more than 13 bus stations and workshops had been completed and work was underway at 14 other locations, including four ISBTs.
A January 2024 report said UTC recorded a profit of Rs 56 crore over two and a half years, described as its first profit since its creation in 2003. Amar Ujala reported on 5 September 2026 that liabilities exceeded Rs 150 crore as of 1 September 2026 and that salary and other payments were overdue.
UTC operates intra-state and inter-state passenger bus services and the State announced plans to introduce electric buses into its fleet, without providing a timeline or procurement details.
What we could not confirm
No audited UTC annual report or DPE-style financial statement was accessible; the profit figure is a news-reported cumulative figure (Rs 56 crore over 2.5 years, Jan 2024) and current-year profit/loss is not officially confirmed, so 'status' is given as Operating with noted financial stress. The exact establishment date (30 October 2003) rests on secondary sources rather than the State's own gazette/website, which was unreachable.
