Official's Scheduled Caste certificate cancelled on looks alone as proof he was Christian; High Court sets it aside
A Tiruvannamalai district vigilance committee declared a senior customs official's Adi Dravidar (Scheduled Caste) certificate not genuine just before his retirement, finding his family still professed Christianity after reconverting to Hinduism. The Madras High Court set the order aside on 11 September 2026. It held the committee had relied on his fair complexion, physique, languages and hair.
This page records what the cited court records and reports say happened. Findings belong to the court or authority that made them; this register adds none of its own. Names of private individuals are withheld unless a naming gate clears them.
How we verify →The cancellation is set aside; the committee must hear him and decide afresh.
What happened
The High Court recorded that his father, originally Hindu Adi Dravidar, converted to Christianity in 1960, that he was born in 1966, and that father and son reconverted to Hinduism in 1983 at the Arya Samaj Centre, Chennai.
The High Court recorded that verification of his community certificate began shortly before his superannuation in May 2026 and that the District Level Vigilance Committee held it not genuine by proceedings dated 04.05.2026.
The High Court held that the committee's reasons, including his complexion, height, physique, languages spoken and curly hair, were not expert anthropological inputs and could not stand scrutiny of law.
The High Court set aside the order and directed a personal hearing, with fresh orders within eight weeks of his appearance.
What the record says
“it merely holds the petitioner as a Christian only because he is fair in colour and has good physique and speaks both Tamil and English and his hair is curly. The same cannot stand scrutiny of law.”

Punished for a freedom
A legal status was taken away on the ground that the holder professed a faith, decided on his appearance and speech rather than evidence.
What we could not confirm
The order was dated 11 September and reported on 19 September 2026. The committee may still reach the same conclusion on fresh evidence; Scheduled Caste status is not available to those professing Christianity under the 1950 Order.
